Winter Challenge at Utah Olympic Oval

The Winter Challenge Short Track Races will be held at the Utah Olympic Oval on January 8-9, 2016. This is a great opportunity to get some races in before you start traveling outside of Utah for competitions! Registration is due January 4th, 2016. Let me know if you have any questions.

Also on January 8-10 the Oval will be hosting the US Short Track Championships. A great opportunity to watch others race....really, really, fast!

Park City Skaters benefitted from some great training advice and got the opportunity to skate with some of the best in the sport of speed skating!

PCSSC and OSSC Get Together for Group Practice

The Park City Speed Skating Club and the Oval Speed Skating Club have been getting together on Monday evenings at the Park City Ice Arena for practice.  It has been fun to have a big group of skaters with a wide range of abilities at the weekly session.  A huge thank you to Coach Catherine, Mike Kooreman and Jessica Smith for coaching!

On July 27th during practice we will be taking the annual club photograph which will be posted here, and used by Youth Sports Alliance and Jans Winter Welcome!

Please be sure to wear your Park City skin suit if you have one. Also, if you have one of the knit hats or anything else with the club logo, bring it as well.

July 6th, Back on the Ice!!

We will be back on the ice July 6th, 2015 at 6:30.

Please plan to attend the first club meeting of the season at 5:30 prior to the ice session. We will collect fees, issue skates, and sign forms.

New 2018 Winter Olympics Event!

The International Olympic Committee announced Monday, June 8th, that  mass start long-track speed skating will make its premier debut at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea!

It’s time for us to get together the general membership of the WSSA so we can hold elections for the Board of Control. The meeting will be held at the Utah Olympic Oval in the World Record Lounge after practice, beginning at 12:30 on Saturday, May 30th.

This meeting is being held as required by WSSA By-Laws for the election of new officers and directors.

Pursuant to the WSSA Bylaws, the requirements for voting in this election are an active membership in one of the Association’s member clubs (currently Park City and OSSC); a current US Speedskating Membership, and having reached the age of 18. Parents can vote on behalf of their minor children. We encourage you to join or renew your membership before the meeting. If any of you are interested in being on the Board of Control (USS membership is a prerequisite), please email your club delegate. The delegates will compile the list of folks who are willing to sit on the Board of Control and present them at the meeting.

Welcome back skaters!

I hope you all had a good couple of weeks of well deserved recovery! Tomorrow we start up with dry land training. This will be a fairly basic and easy workout for the return back. It will consist of running intervals and basic dry land drills. Primarily to get the skaters muscles remembering that oh so wonderful position of sitting below 90 degrees. Dry land is probably the most beneficial training our skaters can do to make large gains on the ice.

Each week we will continue to build up the programs and it will vary from running intervals and imitations, to running the UOP stairs, circuit training and maybe even a game of kickball! Since the skaters are all still growing we will focus on skating specific drills but also general conditioning and coordination to help them become a great athlete regardless of what sport they do!

Mother Nature has been teasing us lately. We are planning to meet tomorrow at 5:30 pm at the PC Ice Arena. If the weather turns wet we will meet at New Park. Please let Rob or myself know if you intend to join us tomorrow. We will send out a final notification on location tomorrow around 4:30. (I just don't want us to miss anyone and Mother Nature has not been helpful at all lately!) We will train from 5:30 - 6:45 pm.

PS - Parents you are more than welcome to join the workouts if you would like! I am warning you....you will likely be very sore but hey it may be more fun than a cross fit class! 

What a great way to wrap up the season!  We enjoyed having several new skaters join us for the last regular practice of the season and welcomed some familiar faces from the Oval club as well. Thanks again to Coach Catherine for her dedication to our club and our skaters...it was a fantastic season!

Thanks also to Coach Catherine, Mike Kooreman, Jessica Smith and the PC Ice Arena skating staff who helped out with Get Out and Play last week.  It was a successful afternoon with lots of fun and great coaching!

Thanks to everyone who helped me get to the 2015 Age Group Nationals in Madison, Wisconsin!  It was a ton of fun with lots of fast skating and competition.  I'm hoping that everyone who meets the time qualifications will be able to go next year and I think that it would be a great experience for all.

It's been a great season for all the Park City skaters with lots of personal bests and major improvements by everyone.  Enjoy the time off and can't wait to see you for dryland in the spring!
